Railway Centre Line, Zurich, Switzerland

2000...2013
Planning study, preliminary, basic and construction design, execution planning and site supervision for the new underground railway station Loewenstrasse underneath the existing Zurich main station and the 4.8km long Weinberg tunnel, a single bore twin track railway tunnel from Zurich main station to Oerlikon (i.e. lots 2 and 3). Special challenges are the crossing of the river Limmat with soft ground and high conductivity as well as the construction logistics in the city centre of Zurich.

High Speed Railway Tunnel through Central Gotthard Massive, Switzerland

1998...2008
The Gotthard Base Tunnel is the core of the new transalpine railway axis, Alp Transit. It consists of a two bore, single track high speed rail tunnel running 57 km between Erstfeld and Bodio. The maximum overburden is over 2'300 m. EWI provided conceptual and feasibility studies, preliminary design, cost estimates, geo-mechanical and structural analyses as well as construction design, detailed civil and E&M design and the preparation of tender documents. EWI was also responsible for the complete design of the 800m deep vertical access shaft to the intermediate access. Assistance during the public approval phase, environmental impact assessment and ventilation and cooling design are important additions.
Ongoing tasks include project management and site supervision, constant geotechnical investigations, and environmental management.

Capacitive reconstruction of the Frankfurt Airport, Germany

2001...2004
Frankfurt Airport (FRA) plays a key role in international air transportation. FRA is one of the most important air transportation hubs and the home base of Deutsche Lufthansa, one of the world's biggest airlines. So demand for takeoff and landing slots at Frankfurt is strong. For this reason alone, rapid expansion of the airport is essential. In addition, air traffic will continue to grow. Expanding capacity at Frankfurt Airport requires construction of a new landing runway, a third passenger terminal (Terminal 3), and a new maintenance hangar for the new A380 long-haul wide body aircraft. Fraport AG has earmarked a total of Euro 3.4 billion for the airport expansion program.
Simultaneously BPI-Consult identified and planned the necessary construction roads, site surface areas as well as the traffic routing during the whole construction phase

Construction of the station terminal of Rostock, Germany

1999...2003
The main station of Rostock was to become centre for change-over traffic of different passenger transportation routes and for this reason a tunnel construction in two systems. Different levels with integrated central and northern reception building were built below the main station of Rostock.
A constant operation of at least 6 of 8 railway tracks of the station had to be ensured during the entire building phase. Thus within the station area the new basement levels are built in the top-down direction under the protection of a top slab resting on drilled piles. This project has received an appreciation in 2004 in the context of the "Landesbaupreis Mecklenburg - Vorpommern". BPI-Consult elaborated the complete design, including conceptual-, preliminary-, building-permit- and final design as well as tender documentation and consulting services to choose the contractor.
